How to Prepare for a Mammogram
1. Schedule Smartly
- If you still have menstrual periods, try to schedule your mammogram one week after your period, when breasts are less tender.
- Avoid scheduling the day before or during your cycle if your breasts are usually sore or swollen.
2. What to Wear
- Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top.
- Avoid dresses or one-piece clothing.
3. Skip Lotions & Deodorants
- On the day of your exam, do not apply deodorant, lotions, creams, or powders under your arms or on your breasts.
- These products may appear as white spots on the X-ray and affect image quality.
4. Bring Your Records
- If this is your first visit to our center, bring previous mammogram images (if available).
- Prior images help the radiologist compare changes over time.
5. Communicate with Your Technologist
Tell your technologist if you:
- Have breast implants
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have noticed any lumps, pain, or changes in your breasts
Don’t hesitate to mention if you’re nervous—they’ll guide you through every step.
6. Manage Discomfort
- If you experience tenderness, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever (such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen) about an hour before your exam.
- Relax and breathe—compression lasts only a few seconds per image.
7. Plan Your Day
- The exam usually takes 20 minutes or less.
- You can return to your normal activities immediately afterward.
